A Disney vacation is a big investment for a lot of families. But going on a Disney trip doesn't have to break the bank! Disney is full of experiences that won't cost you a dime. Join me as I list some of my top FREE things to do in Disney.
All of the options listed below are on property and outside of the parks, ensuring that they are totally free; no extra transportation or park tickets needed!
1. Resort Hopping
Disney resorts are some of the most highly-themed resorts in the world! It can be so fun to spend a time just exploring these hotels and seeing all they have to offer. Each hotel has at least one store and one dining location. You can get to any Disney hotel by taking a bus to any of the parks, Disney Springs, or the Ticket and Transportation Center and then taking the appropriate bus to the hotel you want to visit.
Unfortunately, pool hopping is not currently allowed, except between sister resorts (i.e., All Star Movies to All Star Sports or All Star Music; Port Orleans - Riverside to Port Orleans - French Quarter, etc.). You can, however, engage with resort activities, such as games and movies. Please note that some activities may incur a small fee.
2. Disney Springs
Going to Disney Springs itself is totally FREE (but how much you spend there is up to you). There will be transportation available from your resort to Disney Springs. For those who are unfamiliar, Disney Springs is basically an outdoor shopping/dining/entertainment district. It features Disney stores, such as an art store, a Star Wars-themed store, a pin store (put a pin in this (ha!)), a "co-op", a Christmas store, a toy store, and the famous World of Disney. It also features non-Disney stores, including Uniqlo, Anthropologie, American Threads, Coca-Cola, and Corkcicle, among others.
2A. T-Rex Boneyard
Inside of the T-Rex Restaurant at Disney Springs, there is a small sand dig pit for kids to play in. You do not need to be dining at the restaurant to bring your kids to play in the sand pit. Just note that it can occasionally be loud in the restaurant, so it may not be the best choice for kids who are sensitive to noise.
3. Experience all of the Transportation Options
Walt Disney's love of transportation is evident across Walt Disney World. From trains to buses, monorails and Skyliners, Disney is filled with different transportation options. These can be fun rides in and of themselves! I highly recommend riding the monorail around the resorts (Contemporary, Polynesian, Grand Floridian) and using the Skyliner to explore its connected resorts (Caribbean Beach, Riviera, Art of Animation, Pop Century; and/or the Epcot resort area).
4. Check out the Tri-Circle-D Ranch
Located at the Fort Wilderness Campgrounds, the Tri-Circle-D Ranch houses a plethora of horses on its property. For added fees, you can take a pony ride, go horseback riding on the trails, or take a horse-drawn carriage ride, but it's free to stop there and walk around.
5. Explore the Boardwalk
Disney's Boardwalk area, part of the Boardwalk Resort, is themed to the famous boardwalks of the early twentieth century. It features several shops, restaurants, and bars. There are surrey bikes available for rent; carnival games available for a small fee; and free live entertainment at night. The area features two clubs: The Atlantic Dance Hall, a 21+ venue that plays music from the 80s, 90s, and today and has no cover change; and Jellyrolls, a 21+ dueling piano bar (that does have a cover charge).
There you have it! Five totally free things to do in Disney World. These are perfect to explore on your arrival or departure day, if you're taking a rest day, or if you happen to be in the area and want to experience some Disney magic without the cost!
