Happy Valentine's Day!
One of the most romantic days of the year is a perfect time for a wedding. In fact, of the 2.4 million couples who get married in the U.S. every year, 16,000 of them choose Valentine's Day as their wedding day (source).
On February 14th, 1995, as part of a promotion for Disney's Fairytale Weddings, a couple got married for the first time at The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror in what is now called Disney's Hollywood Studios.
A few months later, on June 18th, 1995, the first wedding at Disney's Wedding Pavilion on the grounds of the Grand Floridian was televised live. The pavilion can host up to six weddings per day, with a maximum of 12 other weddings per day occurring across Disney property.
On Valentine's Day 1999, the first wedding occurred on Disney's private island, Castaway Cay.
"Well, looks like the robins are getting ready to celebrate Valentine's Day today. What year is it? Oh, right around the turn of the century. And things couldn't be any better than they are today." -The Father in Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress
Over 1,500 couples get married each year in Disney World--that means that Disney has hosted more than 27,000 weddings since it first began hosting weddings in September 1991!
Also debuting on this day in 2007 was Disney's honeymoon registry, which allows any interested couples (not just those getting married at Disney) to request specific Disney experiences for their honeymoons or vacations. You can find that service here.
